BAUAW NEWSLETTER-THURSDAY, JULY 7, 2005

LONDON BOMBINGS:

Dear all,

In light of what has happened today in London, it is even more
important to have unity in the American antiwar movement.
The American and British antiwar movement should take the
example of Spain and demand that the troops be brought
home now.

It is the only sane solution to this crisis of violence perpetrated
by the U.S. with the support of England and its army.

No nation or group of nations can attack an unarmed nation,
killing tens of thousands of innocent people, torturing thousands,
and expect that there will be no reprisals. The U.S. is the biggest
purveyor of violence in the world with the help of its allies.
And the blame for these latest bombings can be placed squarely
on the shoulders of the U.S. and its terrorist allies, the coalition
of the willing, and that includes England.

A united antiwar movement is more urgent than ever.

In solidarity,

Bonnie Weinstein

Don't Use Tragedy to Justify Occupation!
COLLEGE NOT COMBAT
HELP US GATHER SIGNATURES ON SATURDAY JULY
9TH--10:30AM!

This morning explosions killed dozens of innocent
Londoners on their way to work. We mourn for those
who lost their lives or suffered serious injuries and
send our condolences to their families. London, which
has been home to some of the largest anti-war
protests in the world over the past two years,
is a city of peace.

Tony Blair and George Bush will, no doubt, use this
human tragedy as a justification for continuing the
occupation of Iraq, which has claimed
the lives of almost 1800 American soldiers, dozens of
British soldiers and 100,000 Iraqi civilians and
resisters.

We say that it is time to stop the killing before more
American, British and Iraqi families lose more loved
ones.

The College Not Combat campaign demands that all US
and British troops return home from Iraq immediately.

Towards that end, we will host an anti-war rally this
Saturday and then finish collecting 15,000 signatures
from San Francisco voters to place the College Not
Combat initiative on the November ballot.

Final Petitioning Effort: Saturday, July 9th
16th & Mission St, San Francisco, 10:30AM
Rally with SF Supervisor Chris Daly; Aimee Allison,
Oakland Green Party*; Peter Camejo, Green Party*; and
others 11:00AM - 2:00PM

City-wide petitioning blitz! Let's capture the hearts
and signatures of San Franciscans everywhere!

TO GET A PROPOSITION ON THE BALLOT THAT SAYS:
The people of San Francisco oppose U.S. military
recruiters using public school, college and university
facilities to recruit young people into the armed
forces. Furthermore, San Francisco should oppose the
military's "economic draft" by investigating means by
which to fund and grant scholarships for college and
job training to low-income students so they are not
economically compelled to join the military.

A DAY FOR UNION MEMBERS, TOO!
The COLLEGE NOT COMBAT ballot initiative has been
endorsed by the San Francisco Labor council, the
American Federation of Teachers Local 2121 (AFT Local
2121), SEIU Local 790, the United Educators of San
Francisco (AFT Local 61) as well as many other
prominent individuals and organizations. On July 9th
there will be a final large petitioning effort to
ensure that this proposition gets on the November
ballot. All union members are encouraged to mobilize
their members to come out on this day.

BAUAW Benefit Presentation of Howard Zinn's
one man show, MARX IN SOHO
Starring Jerry Levy as Karl Marx
Directed by Michael Fox Kennedy.
Thursday, August 4, 7:00 p.m.
Friday, August 5, 7:00 p.m.
Saturday,August 6, 2:00 p.m.
Jon Sims Center for the Performing Arts
1519 Mission Street between 11th Street
and South Van Ness*

Sliding scale donation: $10-$20.00

The premise of the play is that Marx dies yet he is
able to see what's happening on earth for 100 years
since his death in 1883. He is supposed to go back to
Soho in London but, by mistake, is sent to Soho
in New York and finds himself on stage before an
audience. Imagine all Karl Marx would have to say
after one hundred years of just being able to watch...

The single actor in this one-man play is Jerry Levy,
who has been teaching sociology at Marlboro College
and been acting with the Actors' Theater of Brattleboro
since he moved there from Chicago in 1975. Originally
directed by Michael Fox Kennedy of the Actors' Theater,
Levy has been on the road with Zinn's version of Karl
Marx for a year, performing at benefits, colleges, small
theaters and other venues around the state. At Middle
Earth he was sponsored by the Bradford-based Coos Peace
and Justice Alliance and performed free of charge but

Havana. June 29, 2005
Effective effort for confronting housing problem in Cuba
Relying on the participation of the people, says Alarcón
at the official launch of the UN campaign on cities and the
environment
BY JOAQUIN ORAMAS

"IN our country, one of the principal problems is related
to the construction of new houses and the reparation and
rehabilitation of existing stock," stated Ricardo Alarcón,
president of the National Assembly of People‚s Power,
during the closure of the official launch of the national
campaign: "Improving the management of his our cities and
the environment of our homes."

He announced that the conditions are being created so that
an effective effort to confront this problem becomes one of
the major priorities. "An effort that has to have the most
active and dynamic participation of the people," he added.

He described it as gratifying that the launch of the
UN-sponsored campaign has coincided with the Cubans placing
that theme in the place befitting it

He recalled that housing is one of the gravest problems of
humanity as a whole.

In the meeting, Farouk Tebbal of UN-Habitat read out a
message from Anna K. Tibaijuka, executive director o the UN
Center for Human Settlements, in which she highlighted
Cuba‚s work around the housing issue and government will to
solve problems in this sector.

The UN-sponsored campaign launch took place in Las
Guásimas, Habana province and takes in the cities of
Bayamo, Holguín, Cienfuegos and Santa Clara.

These activities are also taking place in India, the
Philippines, Burkina Faso, Morocco, Nigeria, Brazil and
Jamaica.

For Habitat, the campaigns of security of tenure and urban
governability are dual processes. "We do not go anywhere,
to any city or country that does not offer a firm
commitment to work in association from the base with people
inhabiting the area concerned and all the instances of
government. And here in Cuba we have that," affirmed
Catalina Hinchey Trujillo, an official of the Latin
American and Caribbean Office of Habitat.

She added that other countries in the region could learn
from Cuba‚s experience and launch their own campaigns.

Explaining the reason for this plan of action, Rafael
Gomila of the National Housing Institute (INV) stated that
one of the main objectives of the millennium is to improve
the living conditions of at least 100 million slum dwellers
by the year 2020. He warned that, far from improving, the
global situation of housing in the world has aggravated,
leading to the UN Center for Human Settlements qualifying
it as a disaster situation.

It is estimated that there are currently one billion slum
dwellers and among them, more than 130 million are in Latin
America and the Caribbean. The most serious aspect is that
the problem is growing year by year, he added.

He announced that urban poverty in the region had extended
to 40% of its population and that this is associated with
inequality of income and the appropriation of resources, as
Latin America is where the largest concentration of income
is confined to the smallest percentages of people. He
confirmed that the urban situation is extremely
deteriorated in terms of living conditions and housing,
compounded by a lack of infrastructure in education and
health services, among others.

This is the reason for the campaigns to improve urban
government and against evictions, which are the order of
the day in many countries, Gomila said.

In reference to Cuba he said that there are housing
problems related to habitat deficiencies and the need to
repair thousands of houses and buildings. However, the
situation of other countries does not exist, given that
eviction was eliminated in 1959, there is security of
tenure and the state is working to meet the constitutional
principle of not having any family without decent housing.

The beginning of the campaign seeks to mobilize all the
factors to advance with neighborhood improvements and
elevate the role of overall urban planning.

Gomila likewise confirmed that housing is one of the
sectors most prejudiced by the economic blockade applied
against Cuba by the United States for more than 40 years.

Other information given by the INY representative included
the fact that 87% of the Cuban population own their homes
and a part of the rest are tenants or receive free housing.
A lower number are distinguished by their urban
informality. In other words, settlements on the margins of
the regulations established in terms of urbanization with
water and sanitary services.

13) September 24th Anti War March: Statement of Unity
From: TheNNOC@yahoogroups.com
Sent: Wednesday, July 06, 2005 11:55 AM

Dear Friends:

The NNOC has received the call from United for Peace and
Justice, ANSWER, Troops Out Now Coalition, and other
anti-war groups for a march against the war in Iraq which
will take place on September 24. The NNOC joins with voices
in the Peace and Justice movement for a unified march on
September 24. The NNOC as you know is a broad based
collective of member organizations, associations, and
individuals who represent a range of positions in the Peace
and Justice movement.

At this point in time, we are reaching a conjuncture where
polls indicate that the majority of people in the U.S.
oppose the occupation of Iraq, military recruitment numbers
are at an all-time low, and Bush approval ratings are
falling. This growing opposition can have a great impact to
end this war when it is manifested in the streets.

We are asking United for Peace and Justice, ANSWER, Troops
Out Now Coalition, and other anti-war groups to take
advantage of this crucial time for a united action against
the war in Iraq. We would like for you to call for a unity
meeting of all the anti-war organizations to sit down,
discuss, and organize a big anti-war march on September
24th, 2005, in Washington D.C. "The secret lies in unity,
now more than ever." Traditional politics is not the way to
end the war, and in spite of tactical differences, we
shared similar strategic ideas for the struggle. Unity
continues to be the keyword.

Our best weapon in this fight is our unity. If we have
learned nothing else from the Cuban example, we have seen
the power of unified action. We humbly make this call to
your coalitions that have galvanized and led us in this
fight. Forward to a unified march in September.

17) POWER MISSION STATEMENT:
Police Observers Working To Effect Reform (P.O.W.E.R.) is a
local Bay Area police abuse victim's assistant/police
monitoring project. P.O.W.E.R. is made up of volunteers
of all races of people working to end police misconduct/
unlawful violence through fundamental social change using
as its impetus political and legal reform.

POWER's 5-Pronged Strategy:

1. Investigation/Documentation . We, of P.O.W.E.R., match
victims alleging police misconduct/unlawful police violence
with client advocates who have been specially trained to
investigate such allegations. If the client advocate determines
that the complainant's allegations appear to have merit, a case
file is set up, and the alleged incident is further investigated/
documented. this is done by gathering evidence, if any, and
taking sworn statements of fact witnesses. The information
gathered is used to file an official police compaint along
with an attorney match-up.

2. Legal Observation. We, of P.O.W.E.R., periodically send
out observers in teams of two or more to watch for and document
incidents of police misconduct/unlawful police violence against
unarmed citizens as these may occur, as well as at rallies,
protests, and other public demonstrations. The legal observers
gather video footage and/or written declarations of witnesses
to document such instances of police misconduct/unlawful police
violence ( i.e., false arrests, unlawful detainment/excessive
force, deadly force) as these may occur. The legal observer
also gathers on-the-spot victim contact information
( see Incident Report Form ).

3. Public Education/Awareness. We, of P.OW.E.R., conduct
30-minute civil/legal rights educational presentations and 2-5
day training workshops on all levels of learning ( i.e., high
schools, colleges and other higher learning institutions).
We will also stage informal presentations at community centers,
clubs, organizations, and churches to raise public awareness on
the systemic nature of police misconduct and/or unlawful police
violence and the need for police reform.

4. Civil Rights Outreach/Self-Empowerment. We, of P.O.W.E.R.,
disseminate information to the people of the community as to
what their civil and legal rights are under the Constitution of
the United States of America, as well as all applicable federal,
state, and local laws. We also teach victims of police
misconduct/violence what remedies they can pursue independent
of P.O.W.E.R. when they believe their civil and legal rights
have been violated by law enforcement personnel with the goal
in mind to empower the individual in self-advocacy.

5. Public Accountability/Reform. We, of P.O.W.E.R., operate
with the understanding in mind that client advocacy, investigating
/documenting police abuse victem's claims, empowering police abuse
victems to seek legal redress, raising public awareness and civil
rights outreach are but a few means for bringing about an end to
unchecked police misconduct and/or unlawful police violence.
P.O.W.E.R. holds the belief that until police conduct is vigorously
prosecuted by the District Attorney's Office, innocent citizens
will continue to suffer. Therefore, P.O.W.E.R. is seeking police
refom by the ballot, as well, so it won't later on be "by the bullet."

18) BADLANDS PICKET CONTINUES:
Hi
This is a statement just released by LAGADDA and LGBT Black Rap.
It's excellent, and hopefully will be appearing in the BAR this
week...Don't forget, the pickets at Badlands continue, every
Saturday at 10pm, with a 9pm rally at LYRIC, 127 Collingwood.
Join us for one or both! And don't forget to "jump up and down!"
tommi
Mecca44@aol.com

Last week, we learned that the Mayor opposes discrimination
against African Americans, but that he believes it's divisive
to actually speak out for equal treatment, and that it's
important to be "objective" about racism â€"  no "picketing
and jumping up and down. " Is this the same courageous mayor
who challenged the state by marrying thousands of same-sex
couples at City Hall?

And then there's the Bay Area Reporter. The publisher
thinks that all of this talk about discrimination has "put
us in the worst possible light. " He thinks it is "time to
move on" to some of the real threats "to our very way of life...
to focus on the common enemy and form a united front against
the serious threats that we are sure to face."

The truth is, for African Americans and other people of color,
racism and its vestiges are among the biggest threats to our
very way of life. Like homophobia, racism is a common enemy
that warrants a united front. Not only do African Americans
experience discrimination at places like Badlands on an ongoing
basis, African Americans in San Francisco -- including LGBT African
Americans -- have among the highest murder rates, poverty rates,
incarceration rates, HIV prevalence rates â€" as well as other
health disparities, high school dropout rates, and more.
So, it's high time for the Mayor, the Board of Supervisors,
the BAR's publisher, and anyone else within earshot of this
letter, to start picketing and jumping up and down about
racism at Badlands and everywhere else in San Francisco.

It's time to start picketing and jumping up and down about
the fact that Badlands owner Les Natali have been actively
discriminating against members of our own community, and
doing so under the nose of community leaders who knew the
truth but did nothing to stop it, perhaps for
fear of political reprisal.

It's time to start picketing and jumping up and down about
the fact that, two months after a City Finding, the City
still has imposed no penalties on Badlands and owner Les
Natali, and that it took the Mayor and the Board of
Supervisors almost two months to make a public statement
condemning the discrimination found at Badlands. Â Such
silence would never be tolerated if the City's finding
of discrimination involved gay, white men... which may
signal an even
bigger problem: maybe it's time to start jumping up and
down to make the City take seriously the civil rights,
the plight, and the very lives of its African American
residents.

On Pride Sunday, African American LGBT leaders did just
that. In an unprecedented showing of unity, African American
LGBT leaders from Lesbians and Gays of African Decent for
Democratic Action(LGADDA), LGBT Black Rap, the NIA Collective,
Our Live, and other groups dressed in black and jumped up
and down on the parade route to make visible their
frustration with the treatment African Americans have received
in the City of San Francisco, the broader Bay Area, and the
nation. During their unannounced Pride Parade appearance,
the group periodically brought the parade to a stand-still
and distributed to parade goers a statement outlining nine
demands for greater "justice and righteousness" for African
Americans. The statement reads:

After decades of neglect of, hostility towards, and
discrimination against African Americans in this City,
throughout the Bay Area, and across the nation, it is time
for justice to 'run down like water, and righteousness like
a mighty stream.' As African Americans, and as African
American LGBT people, we demand:

-That the City of San Francisco begin to take seriously
the civil rights of the African American citizens of this
community. The City itself found that Castro bar owner Les
Natali violated the civil rights of African Americans. Based
on that Finding, Mr. Natali should no longer be allowed to
do business in this City.

-That the City of San Francisco devote significant
resources to support the development and sustainability
of African American and LGBT African American-owned
enterprises in the Castro and throughout the City.

-That organizations like the San Francisco Chamber of
Commerce, the Golden Gate Business Association, and the
Merchants of Upper Market and Castro likewise begin to take
seriously the civil rights of African Americans and other
people of color by condemning discrimination,
pro-actively hiring African Americans into prominent
positions in public establishments (e.g., salespersons,
bartenders, managers), pro-actively reaching out to African
American patrons, supporting African American business
development, hosting and supporting African American
cultural activities, and more.

-That, along with local funders, the City of San Francisco
and other Bay Area cities launch and support ongoing programs
and institutions that promote dialogue about and address
individual and institutionalized racism and other forms
of discrimination within the Bay Area.

-That, in order to ensure more sensible and accountable
public policy towards African Americans, political clubs
endorse, and city leaders recommend and appoint, a greater
number of African American leaders, and LGBT African American
leaders, to city and state commissions and other leadership
positions.

-That LGBT and mainstream non-profit organizations
recommend and appoint a greater number of African Americans
to their boards of directors and to other leadership roles.

-That the City ensure that LGBT African American leaders
are consulted when issues arise that affect LGBT African
Americans.

-That, in order to address the disproportionate impact
of social ills like crime, incarceration, HIV prevalence
â€" as well as other health disparities, and under-education
on African Americans, local, state, federal government, and
other entities devote a greater share of financial and non-
financial resources to African American mainstream and LGBT
organizations and programs.

-That, most important, San Francisco leaders and policymakers
develop a pro-active plan to stop the expulsion of African
Americans from San Francisco and, instead, invite and welcome
African Americans to our City.

-And finally that, after years of disregard, policymakers,
business leaders, non-profit leaders, and communities across
the entire United States heed this urgent call for equality,
opportunity, and justice for ALL African Americans.

San Francisco: it's time to start jumping up and down.
For fairness and opportunity. For justice.

Signed:Â Lesbians and Gays of African Descent for Democratic
Action (LGADDA) and LGBT Black Rap: Standing for Civil
Rights & Social Justice for Black LGBT & Allies, on behalf
of a coalition of African American LGBT leaders and organizations

19) FROM THE Leonard Peltier Defense Committee HEADQUARTERS
CALL TO ACTION FOR LEONARD PELTIER, #89637-132

This morning, July 1, 2005, Cyrus
Peltier, grandson of Leonard went
to visit his grandpa as he has for
the last 13 years. He was stopped
at the visiting area and was told,
"He's gone". Upon questioning,
he was told that Leonard was
transferred and after further inquiries,
finally found out that Leonard has
been moved to USP Terre Haute,
Indiana.
At this time, Leonard is in the hole
and is being kept there indefinitely.
NOW IS THE TIME TO ACT.

It is basic procedure to keep transferred
inmates in the hole while processing
takes place, however we do not know how
long that will take. We are asking
anyone and everyone to get on the phones
and get out their pens and paper.
Let's flood the telephones with calls
regarding Leonard! Let's stuff their
mailboxes with letters about Leonard!

Urge the prison to allow Leonard to
contact his family as soon as possible.
Ask how he is, ask where to write,
ask if he's OK, ask about his health,
his privileges (phones, letters, visits,
religious rights, ability to paint, etc.)
inquire as to his safety -- anything –
just keep calling and let the prison
know that the entire world is watching
and is concerned about Leonard.

Please be sure to be courteous and
professional, as we do not wish to
complicate Leonard's situation.

The Leonard Peltier Defense Committee,
Peltier Legal Team and Leonard's
family are working hard to ensure
Leonard's safety and we will keep you
informed as things develop.

21) The September 24 mobilization is taking off
--And the antiwar movement needs your help!

The outpouring of support for the September 24 demonstration
has made it obvious to us that the anti-war movement has a
limitless potential to grow. This will be the largest
demonstration since the November elections and this mobilization
poses the biggest political threat to the Bush administration's
war against Iraq and its program of torture, death and devastation.

We urgently need to raise tens of thousands of dollars in the
next few weeks to fund this huge undertaking. If you have
donated before we urge you to donate again. If you have never
made a contribution, now is the time that it is most needed.

Printing hundreds of thousands of leaflets and posters, renting
buses, helping to set up organizing centers around the country,
doing massive street outreach, as well all of the logistical
and set up functions - stage, sound, first aid etc. -- is an
enormous expense. Hundreds of committed volunteers and organizers
devote endless hours to make the work go on but we can't do it
without sufficient funds.

If you are outraged by the arrogance of the Bush White House and
the Pentagon and the danger they pose, please make a contribution
today to support the September 24 March on Washington with
coordinated actions in San Francisco and Los Angeles.

Please consider taking a moment right now to:
* Make an online donation by credit card through our secure
server by clicking here.
* Send a check or money order to:

2489 Mission St. Rm. 24
San Francisco, CA 94110
* Call (415) 821-6545 to make a credit card
donation by phone

We have the momentum: the political climate and popular
opinion in the U.S. is turning dramatically against the
war and the Bush administration is on the defensive. At
this critical moment your support is what will make the
difference.

22) Einstein, Russell, and the Bomb: The 50th Anniversary
By Lawrence S. Wittner
Dr. Wittner is Professor of History at the State University of
New York, Albany. His latest book is Toward Nuclear Abolition:
A History of the World Nuclear Disarmament Movement, 1971 to
the Present (Stanford University Press).
"After the annihilation of Japanese cities with atomic bombs
in August 1945, both Russell and Einstein had warned the
world of the enormous dangers of the new weapons. Nevertheless,
by the mid-1950s, the rampaging Cold War produced an even more
ominous situation: a Soviet-American confrontation, in which
both sides were armed with the hydrogen bomb, a thermonuclear
weapon possessing a thousand times the power of the bomb that
destroyed Hiroshima. The Cold War competitors displayed little
hesitation about integrating the new weapons into their war
plans. Nuclear weapons, President Eisenhower declared publicly,
should "be used just exactly as you would use a bullet
or anything else."
